MAINE – Several new laws go into effect in Maine on Wednesday, including a new open burning law.

This means you now need a permit before you can light a campfire.

You will also need a permit for any campfire larger than three feet in height and three feet in diameter that is not for debris disposal.

Permits for burning brush and wood debris are not affected and are still required under the existing regulations.

The new law also makes it illegal to burn outdoors during red flag warning days.

Wildlife officials say the new law is designed to reduce the risk of larger campfires getting out of control and causing wildfires.

By requiring permits for these types of fires, the state hopes to ensure that fire safety measures are in place to reduce the potential for fire-related emergencies.

Burn permits are available free of charge online after 9am each day.
