TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) initiated its 12 Days of Safety campaign on Thursday, a comprehensive effort aimed at curbing the incidence of traffic fatalities across the state. The campaign, spanning highways, roads, and waterways, underscores the agency’s commitment to promoting safer travel during the holiday season.

State troopers emphasize the urgency of the campaign, highlighting that in 2022, Alabama witnessed over 5,000 crashes attributable to impaired driving, resulting in 260 fatalities. To address this concerning trend, troopers, including marine police patrolling waterways, will intensify their presence throughout the 12-day campaign.

Trooper Reginal King emphasizes that their goal is not merely to apprehend speeders or reckless drivers but to ensure the safety of all those navigating the state’s highways and roads. The campaign’s overarching theme is to encourage responsible driving practices during the holiday season.

“The best gift to give your family is yourself, and that is to arrive alive,” says Trooper King, emphasizing the campaign’s central message.

In 2023, impaired driving has contributed to more than 4,300 crashes in Alabama, claiming the lives of 154 individuals. The heightened presence of troopers on roadways, drawn from both the highway patrol and marine patrol divisions, aims to deter reckless behaviors and promote adherence to traffic regulations.

The 12 Days of Safety campaign unfolds with daily themes focusing on different aspects of road safety. From “know before you go and prepare your vehicle” to seatbelt reviews, each day emphasizes crucial elements of responsible driving.

Trooper King affirms the tangible action behind the campaign, stating, “Make no mistake about it. We’re not out there for show. You’re going to see that presence out there, and we will take action.”

The campaign concludes on New Year’s Day, with a specific emphasis on raising awareness about the dangers of drowsy driving—a prevalent concern during the holiday season as travelers embark on long journeys back home. As troopers intensify their efforts, they hope to underscore the importance of responsible driving practices and ultimately contribute to a safer travel environment for all.
