SUPERIOR, Colo. — Authorities are currently investigating a shooting incident involving law enforcement on U.S. Highway 36 in Superior that transpired on Sunday afternoon.
The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) reported that one of its troopers responded to a motorist assist call at approximately 11:40 a.m. Upon approaching the vehicle, the trooper observed bullet holes in the window, prompting them to retreat and call for backup. Deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly thereafter.
According to CSP, the trooper and deputies successfully negotiated with the male occupant of the vehicle, persuading him to place his firearm on the car. However, during the ongoing conversation aimed at de-escalation, the male picked up the firearm and pointed it at the officers, prompting them to discharge their weapons, striking the male. Despite immediate first aid efforts by law enforcement, the male succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Fortunately, none of the officers sustained injuries, although one officer’s equipment was struck by gunfire, as per CSP.
While CSP did not specify the number of officers involved in the shooting, it stated that both “troopers and Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies” connected to the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave. This status will remain in effect until the conclusion of the investigation by the Boulder County Investigation Team.
The identity of the deceased male will be disclosed by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office at a later date.
