Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has officially withdrawn his nomination as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general, citing concerns that his confirmation process was becoming a distraction for the incoming administration. This decision follows intense scrutiny over allegations related to sexual misconduct and an ongoing Ethics Committee investigation.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Gaetz emphasized, “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.” His withdrawal marks a significant moment in the transition period as Trump prepares to assume office with a Republican majority in both chambers of Congress.
Gaetz’s nomination was controversial from the outset, given his history of conflict within the Republican Party, including his role in the ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Many Senate Republicans expressed reluctance to support Gaetz without first reviewing the findings of the House Ethics Committee regarding allegations of sexual misconduct involving an underage girl.
