Japan’s Lower House Passes Controversial Immigration Law Amendment

Japan’s lower house on Tuesday passed a controversial bill that would amend immigration law to allow authorities to deport individuals who have repeatedly applied for refugee status.

The powerful lower house passed the bill despite fierce opposition from supporters of asylum seekers, who claim the envisaged amendments could lead to the return of people at risk of persecution in their home countries.

The bill will now be debated in the Senate.
