The Office of the Solicitor employs approximately 550 attorneys responsible for upholding and interpreting labor standards and laws related to various aspects, including occupational and mine safety and health, civil rights, pension and health benefits, workers’ compensation, wage and hour requirements, and other labor-related issues.

Attorneys in the Honors Program have the opportunity to work at the department’s national headquarters or at one of its regional offices, with the potential to continue their careers in the Office of the Solicitor upon program completion.

In preparation for the fall of 2024, the department plans to hire around 12 attorneys for the Honors Program. Eligible candidates must have graduated from law school in the spring or summer of 2023 or completed a fellowship or judicial clerkship in time to commence the Honors Program in September 2024. The selection process for this program is highly competitive and places emphasis on several key criteria, including academic achievement, strong writing skills, experience with law review or moot court activities, participation in clinics or extracurricular legal activities, and a demonstrated passion for government service or public interest law.
