MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A group of law enforcement experts from Mexico were in Montgomery Thursday to learn more about how the United States justice system works.
Nearly 40 prosecutors, forensic analysts and investigators were able to observe court proceedings and ask questions.
The programme was part of the bipartisan Attorney General Alliance partnership.
Montgomery County State’s Attorney Daryl Bailey and leaders of the programme said it was a chance to learn best practices from their counterparts while building relationships.
“They are able to see how we do things here in the United States, and they can take the best practices or bring back new ideas and how to do it back home,” said Elena Collins, administrative director of the Attorney General Alliance.
“Their justice system is so different from ours, and they’ve recently changed their justice system. So for them to be able to come to the United States and learn how we do it, which I think is the best criminal justice system in the world, is really an honour. But to choose Montgomery, Alabama, is an even greater honour,” Bailey said.
Bailey said one of the biggest differences between the American justice system and Mexico’s is that they do not have jury trials.
