Recognising the increased foot traffic and shopping activity during this time of year, combined with the recent increase in shoplifting and organised retail and auto theft, Milpitas is increasing law enforcement presence in and around retail stores for the holiday season.
“Our city is home to the Great Mall, the largest enclosed retail mall in Northern California,” said Mayor Carmen Montano in a statement. “We want everyone to shop with confidence, knowing that the city has implemented comprehensive safety protocols to ensure their visit is as safe as it is enjoyable. More importantly, we all need to take an active role in ensuring our own safety and the safety of those around us.”
The city is taking steps to protect shoppers at the Great Mall and downtown Milpitas retailers and restaurants. The Milpitas Police Department has taken steps to create a safe environment, such as increasing patrols in high-traffic shopping areas to deter criminal activity; providing tips and advice on avoiding scams and shopping safety through the city’s social media channels, newsletters and media partners; and partnering with local businesses to provide workshops and training to educate retail staff on conflict resolution, recognizing suspicious behaviour and emergency response protocols.
We know that our work is most effective when it is done in partnership with our community,” said Milpitas Police Chief Jared Hernandez. “We are fortunate to have citizens and a business community that are committed to working with us to reduce crime.”
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity and take personal safety precautions when shopping.
