MINNEAPOLIS – A court battle is brewing over contaminated cantaloupe that has spread salmonella across dozens of states.
Three people have died, two of them in Minnesota. Minnesota also has the highest number of infections, with 20 reported cases of salmonella.
Local law firm Pritzker Hageman, P.A. says a severe salmonella infection sent a 13-month-old Florida boy to the hospital for days.
The firm wants Sofia Produce, or Trufresh, to pay for treatment and other costs. The company’s Rudy and Malichita brands are still under recall.
As of 7 December, at least 230 people in 38 different states have been reported to have been infected with salmonella from the cantaloupe. A total of 96 people have been hospitalised.
People with severe salmonella symptoms – which include diarrhoea, a fever of more than 102 degrees and vomiting – should call their healthcare provider. Symptoms usually begin six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria.
