In Trump case, law enforcement investigates threats to Colorado judges

The FBI and Denver Police are jointly investigating threats made against the justices of the Colorado Supreme Court who recently ruled that former President Trump will not be allowed on the state’s ballots in the 2024 presidential election.

Denver Police Department spokespersons informed Axios on Monday that additional patrols have been deployed around the residences of the justices in response to the threats. The justices had based their decision on the application of the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause to Trump, specifically regarding his involvement in the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot.

In the aftermath of the majority ruling, analysis conducted by the nonpartisan research nonprofit Advance Democracy revealed “significant violent rhetoric” from online Trump supporters directed at the justices and Democrats, as reported by NBC News last week.

The disturbing online posts included demands for the disclosure of the judges’ personal information. A user on a far-right, pro-Trump website even made a chilling reference, stating, “All fing robed rats must fing hang,” as highlighted by CNN on Monday.

In response to the escalating situation, the FBI issued a statement acknowledging awareness of the threats and collaboration with local law enforcement. The Bureau emphasized its commitment to investigating any threats or acts of violence perpetrated by individuals using extremist views, regardless of their motivation.

The Denver Police Department corroborated the ongoing investigation into incidents directed at Colorado Supreme Court justices. They pledged to continue collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to thoroughly examine reports of threats or harassment. Additionally, the police assured the provision of additional safety support upon request, withholding further comments due to ongoing investigations and considerations for safety and privacy.

However, a spokesperson for the Colorado Judicial Branch declined to comment on security-related matters, emphasizing their policy of non-disclosure on such issues.
