Alliance San Diego extended a warm gesture to those still grappling with the aftermath of January’s destructive floods, offering a comforting breakfast and an opportunity to access vital resources and legal guidance.
Elmer Pineda, a resident of San Diego affected by the floods, expressed his exhaustion with unfulfilled promises and sought assistance during the event. Pineda, currently displaced with his family in a hotel due to the flood’s impact on their apartment complex, emphasized the urgent need for tangible support.
Alliance San Diego collaborated with Singleton and Schreiber, a law firm, to address the questions and concerns of flood victims. Brett Schreiber, representing Singleton and Schreiber, underscored the time-sensitive nature of filing claims with the government, emphasizing the importance of taking action within six months of the disaster.
Schreiber outlined the firm’s approach, emphasizing a combination of litigation and community advocacy to facilitate both the reconstruction of affected communities and the prevention of similar incidents in the future.
Addressing concerns regarding immigration status potentially hindering legal recourse, Schreiber assured attendees that California laws protect individuals regardless of their immigration status when seeking redress through the civil justice system.
Offering practical advice, Schreiber advised victims to document mudlines and flood lines in their homes as evidence for potential legal proceedings, highlighting the significance of preserving a record of post-flood conditions.
Regarding legal proceedings, Schreiber clarified that there is currently no class action lawsuit but rather a mass action approach, where each claim is assessed individually based on its own merits. This ensures that each affected person, family, or property owner receives personalized attention and consideration in pursuing their claims.
