On Thursday, Socialist PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis declared that the party would oppose the bill aimed at institutionalizing non-state, nonprofit universities. Androulakis emphasized the importance of strengthening public institutions of higher education through increased resources, equipment, staffing, and research. He underscored the necessity for a unified assessment authority for both public and non-public universities.
The proposed legislation, titled “the establishment of non-state, nonprofit branches of foreign universities in Greece,” is slated to be presented in Parliament by the government in the upcoming week.
Androulakis firmly stated, “We will not support the law,” expressing the party’s stance against what they perceive as commercialization detrimental to both reputable non-state nonprofit institutions and public universities. He emphasized the need for a transparent and comprehensive solution to higher education.
In response, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis criticized Androulakis, characterizing him as “a progressive in words, but in practice a representative of the most genuine anachronism.”
