Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged for swift legal action to be taken following the reported sale of socks bearing the word “Allah” in a popular chain of convenience stores. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, emphasized the importance of respecting all religions and avoiding any actions that could be perceived as insulting Islam.
Addressing the press during the MADANI Ramadan breaking of fast event for media practitioners, Anwar stressed the need for prompt response to any reported transgressions. He emphasized the importance of adhering to legal procedures and avoiding prolonging the issue unnecessarily.
The incident, which involved the circulation of a video and screenshots of the controversial socks on social media, triggered widespread outrage among the Muslim community. Subsequent to the public backlash, the parties involved issued apologies, and a total of 80 police reports have been filed across the nation. Statements have been recorded from eight individuals, including the owner and founder of KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd, in connection with the matter.
Anwar emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and focusing on national interests amidst differing opinions within the Unity Government ranks. He cautioned against hasty judgments or narrow-mindedness, emphasizing the need for open and democratic discourse within the political arena.
Regarding the issue of accountability, Anwar underscored the importance of fair and proportionate responses, highlighting that while mistakes may occur, it is crucial not to impose excessive punishments. He advocated for a balanced approach that prioritizes constructive resolution over punitive measures.
