Luka Modrić, the veteran midfielder for Real Madrid, has agreed to a new one-year contract with the club, ensuring his return for the 2024-25 season. This decision follows Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final, marking Modrić’s sixth UCL title.
Multiple sources, including Fabrizio Romano, confirm the agreement, with Modrić expected to sign the deal next week. Despite receiving lucrative offers elsewhere, Modrić opted to stay at Real Madrid, accepting a lower salary and continuing in a secondary role.
Mario Cortegana of The Athletic reported that Modrić, at 38, will continue to contribute his experience and leadership to a team transitioning to younger midfield talents like Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga.
Modrić’s teammates, Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal, and Nacho, share his illustrious record of six Champions League titles, tying them with Real Madrid legend Paco Gento. While Kroos plans to retire after the Euros, Nacho’s future remains uncertain, and Lucas Vázquez is expected to renew his contract.
The summer has been eventful for Real Madrid, highlighted by the imminent signing of Kylian Mbappé. This major acquisition, along with the retention of key players like Rodrygo, Arda Güler, and Endrick, positions the club strongly for the upcoming season.
Modrić’s return adds depth and stability to Real Madrid’s midfield as they aim to build on their successful 2023-24 campaign, which included triumphs in both La Liga and the Champions League. In the past season, Modrić made 43 appearances, contributing two goals and six assists. His presence will be invaluable as Real Madrid continues its pursuit of excellence in European football.
