Terence J. Lau L’98 Appointed Dean of Syracuse University’s College of Law

Syracuse University has announced the appointment of Terence J. Lau L’98 as the 13th dean of the College of Law, effective August 5. The decision, ratified by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, marks a pivotal moment for the institution.

Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer Gretchen Ritter expressed enthusiasm about Lau’s return to Syracuse, citing his illustrious career as both a lawyer and a higher education leader. Lau, an alumnus of the College of Law, brings with him a wealth of legal and administrative experience, most recently serving as a professor of management at California State University, Chico.

During his tenure at CSU Chico, Lau held various leadership roles, including dean of the College of Business, overseeing significant initiatives such as the introduction of new online programs and successful reaccreditation efforts. His interim appointments as dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management, as well as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, further demonstrate his versatility and capacity for leadership.

Prior to his academic career, Lau held prominent positions in government affairs and law, including roles at Ford Motor Company and a Judicial Fellowship at the U.S. Supreme Court.

In his new role as dean, Lau expressed his excitement about returning to Syracuse and his commitment to advancing the College of Law’s reputation and programs. As Lau assumes leadership, he succeeds Craig Boise, whose tenure as dean concludes this month after eight years of service. Provost Ritter commended Boise for his transformative leadership, which has laid a strong foundation for future success and growth within the College of Law and the University at large.
