Titomic has achieved a significant milestone by securing a contract to implement its cold spray additive manufacturing technology on Woodside Energy’s offshore gas platform, a first for Australia. Through its contractor Monadelphous, Titomic will utilize its low-pressure cold spray system on Woodside’s North Rankin gas platform located in the Indian Ocean.
The cold spray additive manufacturing process, also known as cold spray 3D printing, will enable Monadelphous to fabricate standalone parts or add features onto existing infrastructure without the need for heat or disassembly. Specifically, the system will be utilized to enhance maintenance efforts by depositing corrosion-resistant materials, such as aluminum, directly onto the platform’s steel and metal structures.
Titomic highlights that research conducted by the Woodside FutureLab at Monash University identified applications for its additive manufacturing process in corrosion remediation and prevention. Moving from research to practical application represents a significant advancement for the company.
The adoption of this technology by the oil and gas industry is particularly noteworthy due to the remote locations of many of its operations. On-site repairs and limited disassembly become more compelling from both cost and time perspectives, making Titomic’s cold spray solution an attractive option.
Titomic Managing Director Herbert Koeck expressed excitement about the partnership, emphasizing that it not only validates the effectiveness of their cold spray solutions but also opens up additional opportunities within the oil and gas sector.
