In a significant move invoking powers granted by the recently enacted security law, Hong Kong authorities have revoked the passports of six self-exiled activists residing in the United Kingdom, including prominent figure Nathan Law.

Under the provisions of the newly legislated Article 23 security law, the security chief has initiated special measures against Mung Siu-tat, Finn Lau, Simon Cheng, Fok Ka-chi, and Choi Ming-da, in addition to Law. These individuals, who have been on the wanted list since July and December of the previous year, are accused of engaging in activities deemed detrimental to national security and colluding with external forces to undermine the integrity of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government denounced these individuals as “lawless wanted criminals” who continue to propagate misinformation and smear the region’s reputation while seeking refuge abroad. Consequently, each activist will face severe restrictions, including the annulment of business dealings in Hong Kong and the prohibition of financial support or economic transactions involving their assets.

Furthermore, the implementation of these measures extends to the prohibition of joint ventures or partnerships with the absconders, with potential violators risking imprisonment of up to seven years. These stringent actions come as part of broader efforts to bolster national security and curb perceived threats to Hong Kong’s sovereignty.

Responding to the passport cancellations, Finn Lau emphasized that he holds only a British National (Overseas) passport and has never possessed a Hong Kong passport, labeling the move as “ridiculous” and targeting something that “never exists.”

The revocation of passports represents a notable development in Hong Kong’s security landscape, with the Article 23 legislation symbolizing a renewed commitment to safeguarding national interests amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and domestic unrest. While critics decry the law as vague and regressive, authorities maintain that it is essential for closing perceived loopholes and ensuring stability in the region.
