The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba recently announced the recipients of its prestigious 2024 teaching awards, recognizing outstanding contributions in legal education. Dr. Katie Szilagyi and Mr. Nick Slonosky were honored for their exemplary teaching and dedication to students.
Dr. Katie Szilagyi received The Barney Sneiderman Award for Teaching Excellence. Since joining the Faculty of Law in 2021, Dr. Szilagyi has brought a unique blend of expertise in Law and Technology to her teaching. Her research interests span across the intersection of technology law, artificial intelligence, and legal theory. With educational backgrounds in both engineering and law, including JD, LLM, and PhD degrees, Dr. Szilagyi has been instrumental in designing innovative courses such as Property Law and “Law, Technology, and the Future.” Her teaching philosophy emphasizes fostering students’ curiosity and exploring emerging societal issues through the lens of law and technology. She received high praise from students for her exceptional dedication to pedagogy and the enrichment of their legal education.
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Szilagyi expressed gratitude to her students for nominating her, emphasizing the honor they bestowed upon her through their recognition.
Mr. Nick Slonosky was awarded the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence, recognizing his significant contributions as a practicing professional instructor. Mr. Slonosky has brought nearly four decades of legal practice experience to his role as a supervising lawyer at the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), LLB, and an MSc in Telecommunications. His commitment to experiential learning has been pivotal in preparing Manitoba’s future business lawyers through hands-on legal practice in clinics. Students and colleagues lauded his dedication to student development beyond the classroom, emphasizing skills in networking, public speaking, and professional ethics. Mr. Slonosky highlighted the rewarding nature of his role in shaping students’ legal careers and instilling values of public service.
Reflecting on his teaching experience, Mr. Slonosky underscored the clinics’ role in providing practical legal skills and contributing to the community through pro bono work.
Both recipients exemplify the Faculty of Law’s commitment to excellence in legal education, preparing students with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful legal careers and meaningful contributions to society.
