RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — On Thursday, a national tour dedicated to honoring fallen law enforcement officers made a poignant stop in Raleigh, recognizing the sacrifices of Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd and Raleigh Police Officer Gabriel Torres.
The “Ride to Remember” tour, organized by the Washington-based non-profit Beyond the Call of Duty, visited the Wake County Sheriff’s Office as part of its 73-day journey across the country. Both Deputy Byrd and Officer Torres lost their lives in the line of duty in 2022.
“These fallen heroes will be forever remembered, forever loved, and appreciated for their sacrifice and their families,” said Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe during the ceremony.
Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson also spoke, emphasizing the significance of the officers’ sacrifices. “On this day, the 4th of July, we celebrate freedom. If it wasn’t for our heroes that we have lost, we would not be free. We have learned time and time again that freedom is not free. It takes a sacrifice, and we have seen that sacrifice in our heroes,” she stated.
The “Ride to Remember” tour commenced in Washington on June 1 and is set to conclude at the end of August. The tour spans 73 days, making stops across the nation to honor the memories of law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
