Switzerland has suspended the deployment of a revolutionary euthanasia device known as the “Sarco” pod, which was set to begin its first use within weeks. Dubbed the “Tesla of euthanasia,” the coffin-like Sarco pod allows users to press a button to end their life within seconds by filling the chamber with nitrogen, thereby depriving the individual of oxygen.
According to local news outlet Blick, prosecutors in Schaffhausen Canton, Switzerland, have raised significant legal and ethical issues surrounding the device. They cited uncertainties regarding its operational mechanisms and the difficulty in determining accountability for deaths occurring within the pod.
The Schaffhausen prosecutors have warned that using these pods to assist in someone’s death could result in imprisonment for up to five years. Public prosecutor Peter Sticher highlighted the lack of reliable information about the method of killing and expressed concerns about who controls the mechanical process during the euthanasia procedure.
Dr. Philip Nitschke, often referred to as “Dr. Death,” unveiled the Sarco pod at the Venice Design Festival in 2019. He asserted that his invention would enable users to die swiftly and painlessly, eliminating the discomfort associated with death. However, Sticher has cautioned that Nitschke could face severe repercussions for aiding, abetting, and inducing suicide, especially if done for selfish motives.
In a letter obtained by Swiss media, Sticher stated: “There is no reliable information about the method of killing. [It is] completely unclear who has control over which mechanical process during the dying process.” Under section 115 of the penal code of the canton, determining legal responsibility for the act of euthanasia poses a significant challenge.
Critics worldwide have also voiced concerns about the potential misuse or malfunction of the device, which could lead to unintended and painful consequences. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has criticized the controversial technology, suggesting that a malfunction could prevent the device from inducing unconsciousness, likely resulting in a painful death.
Pro-life groups have also condemned the Sarco pods, arguing that they “glamourize suicide.” James Mildred, director of engagement at CARE, stated: “We believe that suicide is a tragedy that good societies seek to prevent in every circumstance. There are ethical ways to help human beings that don’t involve the destruction of life.”
The suspension of the Sarco pods’ rollout reflects ongoing ethical, legal, and societal debates about assisted suicide and the methods used to facilitate it. The controversy underscores the need for careful consideration of the implications of such technologies and the responsibilities of those who create and use them.
