Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk declared on Tuesday his intention to relocate the headquarters of SpaceX and the social media company X (formerly Twitter) from California to Texas. The decision comes in response to a recent California law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which prohibits school districts from mandating that teachers inform parents about changes in students’ gender identities, a move Musk labeled as the “final straw.”
“This is the final straw,” Musk asserted following the signing of the bill by Governor Newsom, which has exacerbated ongoing cultural tensions in a politically charged U.S. election year.
In addition to criticizing the gender-identity law, Musk cited a broader dissatisfaction with California’s legislative trajectory, accusing the state of enacting measures detrimental to both families and businesses. As a result, SpaceX will relocate its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.
Furthermore, Musk announced plans to move X from its current art-deco headquarters in San Francisco to Austin, Texas, echoing previous threats to relocate the company’s operations.
“We’ve had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building,” Musk remarked, highlighting security concerns in San Francisco.
Tesla, another company led by Musk, has already moved its headquarters from Palo Alto, Silicon Valley, to Austin, Texas, while maintaining an engineering presence in California.
Musk has been outspoken in his opposition to what he perceives as the “woke” agenda, particularly regarding the use of preferred pronouns, which he has criticized on social media platforms, viewing it as potentially harmful to societal norms.
The entrepreneur’s personal experiences have also shaped his views on these matters, notably his strained relationship with his transgender daughter, whom he attributes her political leanings and estrangement partly to her education in California private schools.
Governor Newsom’s enactment of the gender-identity law follows a contentious legislative process that pitted school boards advocating for parental rights against LGBTQ activists concerned with protecting vulnerable students.
The law effectively reverses decisions made in conservative school districts, where policies previously required teachers to notify parents about changes in students’ names, pronouns, or requests to participate in activities incongruent with their official gender.
Governor Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure who has clashed frequently with conservatives over gender-related issues in state education, has previously signed legislation imposing fines on school districts that prohibit the inclusion of LGBTQ-related content in textbooks.
