The French government is moving forward with plans to introduce a new immigration law by early 2025, aiming to address growing security concerns and regulatory challenges. This latest proposal, announced by government spokesperson Maud Bregeon on BFMTV, comes less than a year after the previous immigration bill, which triggered significant divisions both within Parliament and President Macron’s coalition.
Key measures under consideration include extending the detention period for undocumented migrants who are considered a security threat. Currently set at 90 days, the new law could increase the detention time to as much as 210 days. Bregeon emphasized that this is a necessary step to respond to evolving security challenges, though she hinted that additional provisions may be included.
“We are not ruling out other provisions,” Bregeon stated. “Our priority is adapting to the changing security landscape, and we must be prepared to take bold measures.” This position, she said, reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of French citizens and securing the nation’s borders.
Bregeon also expressed unwavering support for Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who has advocated for tougher immigration controls. “Bruno Retailleau’s mission is to protect the security of the French people, and he will not have to apologize for standing firm on these issues,” she stated. “There should be no taboos when it comes to safeguarding public security.”
While the proposed changes are expected to strengthen border security, they are likely to stir debate in the French Parliament, particularly among opposition parties and even within Macron’s own majority. The previous immigration bill faced fierce opposition, and the new measures may spark further divisions as lawmakers grapple with balancing national security with humanitarian considerations.
As the debate continues, questions about the bill’s impact on migrant rights and the potential for increased polarization in French politics remain unresolved.
