U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito confirmed that he spoke by phone with former President Donald Trump on Tuesday afternoon to discuss a potential government position for one of Alito’s former law clerks, William Levi. In a statement shared with Reuters, Justice Alito clarified that the conversation was solely about Levi’s qualifications and did not touch upon any legal issues related to Trump, including his ongoing legal challenges.
Alito explained that Levi had requested his assistance in facilitating a conversation with President-elect Trump regarding his potential candidacy for a government role. “I agreed to discuss this matter with President-elect Trump, and he called me yesterday afternoon,” Alito said. The Justice emphasized that the conversation was strictly about Levi’s qualifications and that no other matters, including any pending or future cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, were discussed.
The statement further noted, “We also did not discuss any other matter that is pending or might in the future come before the Supreme Court or any past Supreme Court decisions involving the President-elect.”
While this exchange occurred, Trump is also embroiled in ongoing legal battles. He has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in his case involving a criminal conviction related to payments made to a pornographic actress, seeking to prevent a New York state court from sentencing him. On Tuesday, a New York appeals court denied his request to halt sentencing, which is scheduled for Friday in Manhattan.
In response to the appellate court’s decision, Trump’s legal team filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday, asking the Court to issue an emergency stay of sentencing as they seek an appeal on issues concerning presidential immunity.
