TikTok To Shutdown In The U.S. On Sunday Amid Federal Ban

by Celia

TikTok is preparing to shut down its U.S. operations this Sunday as a federal ban is set to take effect, unless there is a last-minute change, according to sources familiar with the situation. The ban follows a law passed in April, requiring TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform or face a shutdown.

The law prohibits new TikTok downloads on Apple and Google app stores, and it prevents U.S. companies from offering services that support the app’s operation, including distribution, maintenance, and updates. While users who already have the app downloaded may still use it, services to maintain the app will be halted.

Despite the ban, President-elect Donald Trump is considering issuing an executive order to delay the enforcement for 60 to 90 days after taking office. However, the legal basis for such an action is unclear.

If the shutdown proceeds, TikTok plans to show users a message explaining the situation, with a link to more information about the ban. Users will also have the option to download their data before the platform goes dark.

The U.S. Supreme Court is currently deliberating whether to uphold the law, pause it, or overturn it entirely. If the ban takes effect, it could also affect TikTok’s global services, as many U.S. service providers help keep the platform running worldwide.

TikTok is preparing for a temporary shutdown, which would allow the company to quickly restore operations should the ban be lifted or delayed. The company has not made an official comment yet.
