President Donald Trump pledged his support for anti-abortion activists in his second term as tens of thousands gathered in Washington on Friday for the annual March for Life. “We will again stand proudly for families and for life,” Trump said in a prerecorded video message.

For decades, protesters have come to the capital to call for the repeal of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to abortion. With Roe repealed in 2022, the movement has shifted its focus to building on recent victories. With Trump back in the White House and Republicans controlling Congress, pro-life advocates are optimistic about further progress.

“Our country faces the return of the most pro-family, most pro-life American president of our lifetimes,” Vice President JD Vance told the crowd in a speech. He praised Trump for his previous actions on abortion, including the appointment of hundreds of anti-abortion judges and the repeal of Roe.

Trump has already taken several steps related to abortion in his first days in office. These include enforcing the Hyde Amendment, which restricts government funding for most abortions, and reinstating a policy that requires foreign organizations to certify they do not promote abortion if they receive US federal funds for family planning. This policy has been a partisan issue, with every GOP president implementing it and every Democrat rescinding it.

Despite the cold weather, the event had a festive atmosphere, with activists wearing colorful hats and holding signs that read “Life is our revolution” and “MAGA: Make Abortion Gone Again.” Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America group, called it a “significant moment in history,” noting the unique alignment of pro-life Republicans in the White House, House of Representatives, and Senate.

Kristen Cooper, a 21-year-old member of Students for Life America, attended her fourth march but her first with a Republican administration. “It’s surreal, actually,” she said. Anna Henderson, a teacher at a Catholic high school in Michigan, brought a busload of students to the march. She emphasized that despite the administration’s support, the fight is not over. “We still need to change people’s hearts,” she said.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said there is still work to be done. She called on Trump to defund Planned Parenthood and provide resources like paid family leave for women with unplanned pregnancies.
