President Donald Trump has nominated several loyal advisers from his first term to top positions within the Justice Department, including John Eisenberg to head the National Security Division and Brett Shumate to lead the Civil Division. Both nominations highlight the ongoing influence of Trump’s administration in shaping key legal roles.
Shumate, already acting head of the Civil Division, has overseen defense efforts regarding several contentious issues, including lawsuits related to federal worker firings and the actions of Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency. He has a history with Jones Day, a law firm with strong ties to Trump, and previously served as a deputy assistant attorney general during Trump’s first term. Eisenberg, who advised on national security matters in the first term, has a distinguished legal background, having clerked for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and served in various roles at the Justice Department.
All nominees, including Patrick Davis for the Office of Legislative Affairs, require Senate confirmation. The nominations follow Trump’s recent directive to remove U.S. attorneys appointed by the previous Biden administration, citing concerns about political bias within the Justice Department.
