Insurers Prepare Legal Response to Vandalism by Anti-Israel Group Palestine Action

by Celia

Two major insurance companies, Allianz and Aviva, have issued warnings of potential legal action against Palestine Action, an organization known for repeated acts of vandalism targeting their offices and facilities. The group’s actions are allegedly motivated by the insurers’ financial connections with Israeli companies, specifically Elbit Systems.

Allianz, a German-based insurer, stated it is “exploring all options to protect [its] people, business, and property,” which may include direct legal action. This announcement follows numerous incidents, including an event on Friday where an Allianz office in Glasgow was defaced with red paint. Palestine Action has claimed responsibility for dozens of similar attacks since October, including spray-painting the company’s Manchester office and hanging Palestinian flags at their London location.

Despite previous warnings, Palestine Action has remained defiant, dismissing the threat of legal action. In a recent Instagram post, the group asserted that “direct action” is more effective than legal measures, suggesting that Allianz should cease working with Elbit Systems to avoid further targeting.

Aviva, a British insurance company, also reported being targeted by Palestine Action, with activists vandalizing their Motherwell office with red paint and placing flags at their premises. An Aviva spokesperson responded firmly, stating, “Our first priority is to ensure the safety of our people… We will not tolerate any criminal behavior towards our people or property, and we will take appropriate legal action”.

These incidents are part of a broader campaign by Palestine Action, which has been targeting businesses and institutions they associate with Israel since 2020, intensifying their activities since October 7. Their tactics include vandalism, property damage, and disruptions aimed at raising the cost for companies working with Elbit Systems.

Both Allianz and Aviva have affirmed that these attacks have not disrupted their services to customers. However, the insurers are taking the threats seriously and are working with law enforcement to address the situation.
