Apple Set to Avoid EU Fine Over Browser Options

by Celia

Apple is poised to avoid a potential EU fine and directive related to its iPhone browser options after implementing changes to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The European Commission, which launched an investigation last March, is expected to close the case early next week. Concerns had been raised that Apple’s browser design hindered users from switching to rival browsers or search engines.

The EU decision comes amid tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened tariffs against countries fining U.S. companies. The DMA aims to facilitate user transitions between online services and promote competition among smaller rivals. Companies violating the DMA risk fines up to 10% of their global annual sales.

The Commission’s decision will coincide with fines and compliance orders for Apple and Meta Platforms over separate DMA breaches. Apple faces scrutiny over restrictions on app developers promoting offers outside its App Store, while Meta’s ad-free subscription service has been criticized for lacking free alternatives.
