A California man, Nicholas Roske, plans to plead guilty to attempted assassination of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, his lawyers announced on Wednesday. Roske, who had planned to kill Kavanaugh at his Maryland home in 2022, requested a federal court hearing next week.
Roske, from Simi Valley, California, had traveled to Maryland with the intent to kill Kavanaugh, a conservative justice, and then take his own life. He was arrested on June 7, 2022, after contacting law enforcement to report his suicidal and homicidal thoughts.
Roske was reportedly angered by the Supreme Court’s stance on abortion and gun control. The incident came just before the Court was set to make a final ruling on the controversial Roe v. Wade case. Abortion-rights protests took place outside the homes of Kavanaugh and other justices during this time.
Roske now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for the charge of attempted assassination. His trial had been set for June but will be avoided with this plea.
