New York state leaders have enacted three new laws to combat gun violence. The first law imposes penalties on individuals using rapid-fire modifiers, known as pistol converters, which can make semi-automatic pistols fire faster.
Governor Hochul emphasized that public safety is her top priority. She stated, “We’re taking action to drive down gun violence, making our streets safer by giving law enforcement additional tools.”
The new legislation also includes measures to track the buying and selling of bulk firearms and requires gun purchasers to see warnings about the dangers of having guns. Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon highlighted the need for manufacturers to be accountable for their role in gun violence.
Shootings in New York have decreased significantly, with a 53% drop from 497 incidents in the first quarter of 2022 to 236 in the same period this year. Governor Hochul plans to increase funding for anti-violence community programs in the next budget.
