Nokia Sues Acer, Asus, And Hisense Over Patent Violations

by Celia

Nokia has launched legal action in the United States against three major tech companies—Acer, Asus, and Hisense—over alleged violations of its patents related to video streaming technology. The lawsuits, filed on Monday in California, Georgia, and Texas, claim that Acer and Asus’ computers, as well as Hisense’s televisions, infringe on five of Nokia’s patents concerning international standards designed to enhance the efficiency and quality of streaming video.

This move marks a significant escalation in Nokia’s ongoing patent disputes, as the Finnish company had already filed similar lawsuits in Europe last week against the same tech giants. In addition, Nokia recently settled a separate patent dispute concerning streaming video technology with Amazon.

The lawsuits center around Nokia’s standard-essential patents (SEPs) for video coding technology—patents essential for devices to meet global communication standards such as 4G, Wi-Fi, and USB. Nokia asserts that it has been trying for years to reach licensing agreements with Acer, Asus, and Hisense but has faced resistance.

While spokespeople for Acer, Asus, and Hisense have yet to comment on the allegations, Nokia has expressed hope that the companies will soon agree to fair licensing terms, similar to the agreements Nokia has made with many of their competitors.

Nokia, which transitioned from producing mobile phones in the early 2000s to focusing primarily on research and development, now owns over 20,000 patents worldwide. The company is seeking unspecified monetary damages as part of its legal claims.

The lawsuits are titled:

  • Nokia Technologies Oy v. Acer Inc, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, Case No. 1:25-cv-00523.
  • Nokia Technologies Oy v. ASUSTek Computer Inc, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Case No. 2:25-cv-03053.
  • Nokia Technologies Oy v. Hisense Co, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

Nokia is being represented in these cases by Warren Lipschitz, Alexandra Easley, Erik Fountain, Mitch Verboncoeur, Joshua Budwin, and Josh Newcomer from McKool Smith.
