Democratic state attorneys general sued the Trump administration Thursday to stop it from cutting over $1.1 billion in COVID relief funds for K-12 schools.
Filed in Manhattan federal court, the lawsuit challenges the Department of Education’s sudden move to block access to funds originally promised through March 2026 under a pandemic aid law. The money was meant for tutoring, school upgrades, and support for homeless students.
New York Attorney General Letitia James called the decision “outrageous and illegal,” saying it hurts vulnerable students. AGs from California, Illinois, and other states joined the suit, arguing the move violates federal procedures.
The White House has not responded. Last week, a judge halted a similar $11 billion health grant cut.
