Germany Proposes Legislation to Ease Gender Change

The German government on Tuesday submitted a draft self-determination law that, if accepted, would make it easier for people to legally change their names and gender.

The proposed law would end a decade-old rule requiring Germans to obtain expert assessments and court authorization. Under the new rules, adults can change their name and legal gender at the registry office without any additional formalities.
