Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill into law Wednesday that will offer eviction protections for residential tenants.
The Democrat-sponsored bill, which cleared the state House of Representatives on April 10 and the state Senate on May 6, requires landlords to participate in mandatory mediation with tenants receiving public assistance before taking action to evict them.
However, there are exceptions. If a tenant has declined or failed to disclose to the landlord in writing that they receive assistance, landlords and tenants are not required to go to mediation. Nonprofit organizations that offer mediation before filing for an eviction and landlords with five or fewer rental units are also exempt from the requirement.
