In an effort to champion First Amendment rights at a local and regional level, Nebraska Law has inaugurated the First Amendment Clinic. The clinic’s primary focus will be on cases pertaining to freedom of speech, press, assembly, and petition, bolstering law students’ comprehension of these rights while serving as a crucial resource for individuals and organizations dedicated to safeguarding them.
Richard Moberly, the dean of the College of Law, emphasized the significance of clinical programs in honing practical skills for law students. He expressed gratitude towards the Stanton Foundation for providing the opportunity to empower students in promoting justice and addressing legal issues.
The First Amendment Clinic, helmed by Director Daniel Gutman and Assistant Director Sydney Hayes, will be an addition to Nebraska Law’s expanding array of clinical offerings. Gutman, a former practitioner with a background in constitutional claims and election law, brings valuable experience to the clinic. Similarly, Hayes, who specializes in complex constitutional matters and business disputes, contributes her litigation expertise.
Gutman underlined the dual mission of the clinic: defending clients’ First Amendment rights while providing students with an in-depth understanding of First Amendment law. Notably, the clinic intends to undertake cases spanning a diverse ideological spectrum, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
Scheduled for launch in spring 2024, the First Amendment Clinic will be accessible to third-year law students. Despite its upcoming commencement, the clinic is actively seeking potential clients, encompassing a wide range of cases.
