The passage of new legislation has bolstered penalties for illegal street racing while equipping law enforcement and prosecutors with additional resources to combat these activities.

House Bill 2829 now allows for the immediate impoundment of vehicles involved in street racing or reckless driving incidents. Previously, impoundment was contingent upon property damage or bodily injury, but now authorities can impound vehicles when the owner is charged with racing on a highway or engaging in reckless driving exhibitions.

House Bill 1442 has empowered law enforcement and prosecutors to target organized street racing and takeovers that are organized through social media platforms. Sgt. Carla Burr of the Amarillo Police Department welcomes this development, acknowledging that while it may not completely eliminate such activities, it will likely make potential participants think twice before getting involved.

Street racing is a persistent issue in Amarillo, and authorities often encounter instances of it. Sgt. Burr emphasizes the dangers associated with street racing, citing the risk of accidents resulting in injuries or fatalities. Sheriff Brian Thomas of the Potter County Sheriff’s Office reinforces this point, stating that city and county streets are not suitable places for such activities.

An alternative for those interested in racing is the Amarillo Dragway, where it can be done safely and legally. Sgt. Burr highlights the cost-effectiveness of racing at the dragway compared to the potential consequences of illegal street racing, such as losing one’s car, receiving a hefty ticket, or facing jail time.

To combat street racing and raise awareness, the Amarillo Police Department is organizing a Race-A-Cop event on Saturday, September 16 at The Amarillo Dragway located on Burlington Rd. This event will feature a different format from previous editions, including test and tune sessions and rolling starts. Sgt. Burr notes that this format may level the playing field, allowing slower cars to have a better chance against faster ones due to the starting method employed.
